A daytime trip to Kiama feat. Sydney Trains Oscar

PavløvA_YT

I went down to Kiama (in NSW's south coast) today on board an Oscar (H Set).

I also returned on one.

Here are some photos!

H45 and classmate handled the route up to Kiama, it was a very smooth ride, as usual with these Japanese trains (engines and inverters from Mitsubishi). We also have some French trains (share motors and inverters with a Z20900...)

Here is another photo.
H52 and classmate (H20 I think?) took me home.
I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO THIS!

You can actually build one of these exact units if you want -- H52 is available now!

S-Tog update

The body is now assembled!

BR Class 350 TPX

PavløvA_YT

After a long hiatus from making Siemens Desiros, I decided to finish the TransPennine Express (TPX) livery I started a while back. Here are all 4 carriages.

DMSO - Driving Motor Standard Open
PTSOL - Pantograph Trailer Standard Open Lavatory
TSO - Trailer Second Open

DMOC - Driving Motor Open Composite

Here is a photo of one of these trains (from Wikipedia)

Definitely their best livery 👌

4G S-Tog templates

In the articles announcing a prototype S-Tog, I said this:

Sometimes, we go back on our promises.

Here is the model. Enjoy!

Just note that this model is actually a prototype and so detail is not the best. You will also encounter things on the train that do not make sense.

Arrange as SA-SB-SC-SD-SD-SC-SB-SA or as SE-SF-SG-SH.

Just some Tangara's and Oscars for anyone curious.

If you live in France this may be the first time you ever see Australian trains!

S-Tog Model Update

PavløvA_YT's Modelling

Today, I took delivery of more S-Tog parts, now I have a carriage to build...
This is the front end. It printed terribly.
Finally, I actually have a carbody for it
The base piece, you have seen this before.

I am out of glue so this is the best build process you will get for now.

Hayden, fix your printer settings.

TFNSW TrainLink Oscar (D Set repaint)

PavløvA_YT

Driver carriage, to show off the rather pleasant livery
Full consist

Today, I put the livery of a TrainLink D Set on an Oscar. I did this just to mess with one of my friends (guy named Thomas) but it looked so nice that I kept it in the end!

Should fold like the rest of my Oscars.

Also note the toilet has a plated over cubicle, covered by a metal plate, just like on a D Set.

D Set model coming soon (potentially in 3D) along with the K Set I started yesterday.

Here is a REALLY BAD photo of a D Set... hope you can make the livery out from this.

Newcastle K Set Datasheet

PavløvA_YT

For anybody curious about the history of the Newcastle K Sets, this will provide a good resource.

This shows all 5 liveries of the Newcastle K Set, and their operation history during this time.

By the way, these trains rarely ever ran in 2-carriage formation, usually operating as 4, 6 or even 8 carriage sets (K1-K4 coupled together).

I have, however, found a photo of K3 running by itself (curiously, the driving trailer leads). This K Set is now part of K99, which I believe has been scrapped, or is going to be scrapped soon. Shame.

NSW Railways Infrastructure and Operations: The Main North K Sets
Anyway, this is a really good photo, I don't know who took it.

You can tell a driving trailer apart from a typical driving motor by the single grate on the roof (compared to the two found on motors, which have resistors underneath them) and the slot in the roof for a pantograph (a feature of all trailer cars).

Experimental K67

PavløvA_YT

I know how terrible this looks, don't worry...

This is half of K67, I weathered it as an experiment, because K Sets are always grimy. Only half of it has been made because I ran out of time to weather 4 carriages, and this is purely experimental.

Also, the graffiti on P1 has a meaning, should you choose to... decipher it?

More K Set numbers probably coming soon.

Auscision Tangara upgrades???

PavløvA_YT

A while ago (2022) I bought an Auscision Models Tangara. I bought it because it is a very accurate model of, in my opinion, one of the coolest trains on earth.

It is quite accurate, but some details are lacking.

Hence, I will probably (?) make a 3D printable "upgrade kit" of sorts -- nothing too complex, just to add detail.

For instance, these gangways look nice, but only when the train is inline...
As these gangways are plastic, they dont flex... at all. Hence, TPU gangways would be a natural upgrade (although they would limit the turning radius a lot and effectively permanently couple the train)

These couplings are good, they reduce backlashing under acceleration...

But knuckle couplers would be better, then the carriages could be tugged around as single cars for transfer. I will design new coupling yokes that can hold KD couplers.

Also, not all tangaras looked like this one.

Two types were built, I have photos of both:
This is a "T Set" -- these have been suburban their whole lives and have a flat front.

This is a "G Set" -- an intercity Tangara. It has door buttons for SDO (disabled now as they only run suburban) and a distinctive cut-out nose (as opposed to the flat-fronted T Set)

They used to have a toilet as well, but it was torn down once they finished intercity running in 2011.

Auscision only made a tangara with a flat front -- many people (including myself) want a G Set but are too impatient to wait for Auscision to make it. Hence, I may even design a G Set front end for the Tangara (although it is not too difficult to convert one yourself)

Door buttons may also be made, but they will be about 2mm wide so a very good 3D printer will be needed to make them.

All of these will be published for free.
